the 4K Blu-ray’s real world scenes still look more detailed too than they do on HD Blu-ray too, and while grain from the 35mm source looks slightly more noticeable, it also looks consistently natural and filmic.īlack levels are immaculate richer and deeper than they look on the HD Blu-ray, but never forced. The ‘real’ world stuff tends to look less dynamic than Oasis, but it’s still generally significantly brighter than the SDR transfer on the HD Blu-ray. Look, for instance, at the patterning on Parzival’s face, the textures of Art3mis’s leather jacket, the gleaming metallic highlights of the game’s cars and bikes… everything looks crisper and more defined thanks to the extra clout HDR adds to subtle tonal differences in the picture’s most detailed areas. The detailing is enhanced gorgeously by some brilliantly effective HDR enhancements - especially during the scenes in Oasis.
The real and virtual worlds both enjoy depths of field, too, that go comfortably beyond those you get from the HD Blu-ray. The latter being, of course, what the filmmakers intended.Ī trailer park of the future. With much of the Oasis footage, for instance, the uptick in resolution (together with the 4K disc’s HDR and wide color performance) essentially makes the difference between feeling like you’re just watching an HD video game and feeling like you’re watching a new mid-point between animation and reality. While the lack of native 4K source material does stop Ready Player One from providing the sharpest, most pristine 4K Blu-ray transfer, though, the extra resolution still delivers some benefits. And it’s likely that sticking with a 2K DI (presumably upscaled for this 4K Blu-ray) is the reason Ready Player One’s CGI work looks convincing for the most part, avoiding that forced, artificial look that you can get when 2K effects are placed within an otherwise mostly native 4K film (see the 4K Blu-ray of X-Men: Apocalypse to see that issue in action). This isn’t really a surprise, though, given the extent of the film’s reliance on CGI, where 4K rendering is still in its infancy. Quality trumps quantity when you're trying to solve the ultimate gaming Easter egg.
